  • Coal pile or “kolmila” in Rävaberg” near Edsbyn – David Åberg

Coal pile, “kolmila” near Edsbyn with group of men, approx 1910. This image was in my great grandfather’s photo collection. (This is cropped version of the original to show more detail.) Our family believes the young man on far right is David Åberg, son of Per Johan Åberg and grandson of Olof Olsson Åberg. This may be around 1910. Would like to identify other people in photo. From Kjell Åberg – I have not seen this type before, but it looks like a “kolmila”, where you build an intricate pattern with lumber and then light it very carefully and guard it so it burns very slowly and not completely –…

  • Letter from John Olof to cousin Erik Blomquist

Facebook is good for some things! Quite by accident, I saw a post, in the Alfta, Sweden, Facebook group, by a man that had a letter. The letter was from my great grandfather John Olof Oberg to his cousin Erik Blomquist Sept 19, 1904, just days after Olof arrived in the U.S. The owner of the letter was Christoffer Frances, a relative of Erik. Christoffer’s uncle Carl-Lennart Frances married Göta Helena Blomquist, daughter of Anna Maria Åberg (Per Johan’s sister) and (the elder) Erik Blomquist. Erik had a blacksmith shop in Alfta, nextdoor to Edsbyn, where the Åberg Urafors axe factory was. Christoffer translated the letter for us as well…

  • Obergs PhotoBook

(Photo is Olof, Clara, children Katherine and David, and Clara’s mother Karin, with their auto, approx. 1920.)   In 2020 I made, with my son Carleton’s help, a photo book featuring many of the gorgeous old photos that were in the collection of my great grandparents John Olof and Clara Oberg along with some family history. We printed copies and gifted them to family for Christmas. You can find a slideshow of the book HERE

  • Åberg family and Urafors

(Photo is John Olof Oberg at forge, possibly in Boone, Iowa, shortly after immigration in 1904)   Olof Olsson Åberg, my great great great grandfather, was co-founder of Urafors axe factory in Ullungsfors (later moved to Edsbyn), Sweden with his brother Per Stålberg. These axes are well known in Scandinavia as being extremely high quality and desirable even though they were made MANY years ago, most of them approximately between 1860 to mid 1960s. There are a number of photos at the Edsbyn museum of the Urafors axe factory and workers, most from the years 1900 and after. I’ll include some links below. When Olof Olsson passed away in 1900,…
